Ground Survey Section (GSS)

The GSS conducts its activities on the ground and is mainly on inventory, mapping, assessment and monitoring vegetation through ground sampling techniques.


  1. To inventory, map, assess and monitor vegetation and wildlife and livestock habitats in the Kenya Rangelands;
  2. To undertake land use/cover mapping and monitoring (vegetation cover);
  3. To assess and monitor seasonal vegetation biomass production


  • Land degradation assessment and monitoring;
  • Vegetation inventory, cover mapping and monitoring;
  • Land use/cover assessment with respect to plant biodiversity;
  • Plant inventory and taxonomy (herbarium database development, and,
  • Seasonal biomass monitoring range management and drought forecasting.

Ground Surveys Services

This service is offered to both Government, Private sectors and researchers. DRSRS has adequate staff and equipment to offer Consultancy and Government Requests in areas of Ground Surveys, Aerial Surveys and Remote Sensing.

  • Service Request +

    To request a consultancy service on Ground Survey, you will need to download and fill an application form and then return it to DRSRS. For Government Departments, you will need appropriate authorization, most likely from departmental director.
