2013-2014 Achievements

The Directorate’s Programmes/projects are relevant to flagship projects in Vision 2030 and the main flagship projects are Securing wildlife corridors and migratory routes and land use/cover mapping as indicated under the following programs/projects:

  1. Rangeland Assessment and Monitoring of Livestock and Wildlife Population and Distribution
    1. Aerial survey of Narok, Kajiado, Turkana and Marsabit Counties: Technical reports produced. The foregoing data and information were used in mapping wildlife corridors and dispersal areas; Phases I and II reports have been generated. This is one of the flagship projects under the Kenya’s Vision 2030: Securing wildlife corridors and migratory routes.
    2. Contribution to Vision 2030: Ensuring all wildlife ecosystems are fully protected, establish wildlife population trends and wildlife corridors and dispersal areas are intact.
  2. Land use/cover Assessment and Mapping
    1. Land degradation in Makueni Counties: Draft Technical Report produced.
    2. Mapping of Mangroves forest along the Coast: Draft Technical Report produced
    3. The inventory and mapping of wetlands (Phase II): Survey completed in parts of Athi and Tana Rivers Drainage Basins, Draft progress report produced. Kenya Wetlands Atlas (Phase I) was published in 2013
    4. Inventory and Mapping of Dams in Kenya as part of wetland project done in parts of Coast and Eastern region done, e.g in Machakos ,Makueni, and Kilifi: Draft Technical Report produced.
    5. Land Use/cover Mapping of Kakamega: Draft Technical Report produced
    6. Assessment and mapping of Ewaso Nyiro North Water Towers: Draft Technical Report produced
    7. Urban land use/cover mapping of Mombasa County and land use /cover mapping Kwale County are ongoing. Land us/cover mapping of Kilifi County done and Draft progress report produced.
    8. Contribution to Vision 2030: Land use land cover mapping flagship project
